The most important thing is to know your FICO score. Here are some ways you can improve your credit score:
- Don't let your cards get dusty. Whether you're just getting started with credit, or if you've got older cards, be sure to use your cards so that your accounts stay active. But, make sure you pay them off in one or two payments.
- Pay on time. Late payments hurt your credit score. It's where people who have recently experienced job loss see the biggest dip in their credit score. Yes, it takes longer to rebuild your credit with payment history, but it's the most reliable way to prove that you're responsible enough to make payments to a bank.
- Ensure that your credit history is correct. If you find incorrect items on your credit report, contact the bureau asking that the item be removed. If you have a common name or the same name as a family member, you'll want to pay extra attention to make sure the activity reported is correct.
- Even out your debt. At first, this doesn't seem like a good idea. But, you don't want to have one card that is at the limit and have the rest of your cards at a zero balance. It's better to have each of your cards at an even balance than to have the bulk of your debt sitting on one card.
- Department Store cards and gas station cards. For those who have no credit or below average credit, retail credit cards and gas credit cards are ways to establish your credit history, increase your credit limits and stay on top of your payments, which will raise your credit. Simply beware of holding a balance for more than a couple of months because these types of cards more than likely have a higher interest rate.
- Secure Credit cards. When you can't seem to get approved at local stores, open a secure credit card from your bank. This is good training for people who have never had credit or need to re-establish credit. You actually pay the bank the dollar amount equal to the limit on your card. Then you can use it and pay it each month. Make sure you pay on time and keep a low balance if any.
